Commercial Energy Consumption Trends and Demand Projections for Pakistan Mohammad Aslam Uqali, Khanji Harijan and Saleem Raza Samo
Abstract: Pakistan is an energy-deficient country. Large portion of the country's population has no access to commercial energy. The commercial energy is dominated by gas followed by oil, hydel energy, coal and nuclear energy. the indigenous reserves of oil and gas are limited and the country is heavily dependent of the import of oil. the oil import bill is a serious strain on the country's economy and has been deteriorating the balance of payments situations. with the economic development and with efforts to provide enhanced access to commercial energy, the energy demand in the country ex expected to grow rapidly. this paper presents the commercial energy consumption trends and demand projections for Pakistan. The study indicates that the commercial energy consumption in Pakistan increases rapidly at an average growth rate of 6.8% per annum during the last five decades. the paper concludes that the commercial energy demand in the country is projected to be about 90-139 MTOE (Million Tones of Oil Equivalent) by the year 2018 under different scenarios. Development of indigenous energy sources is essential for meeting the growing commercial energy demand and increasing economic independence in the country.
